In studying the world from a historical perspective, the successful student will use curiosity to build a desire to dig deeper into the story. A degree in history prepares a student to understand and interpret the world in a more thorough way. As part of classic humanities, history asks questions about what it means to be human…what it means to be a part of the culture. History graduates refine their abilities to read and analyze vital texts, evaluate the importance of turning points in history, and shape the culture of tomorrow. The program emphasizes the vital skills of writing and research. History students may choose to become professional historians, pursuing careers in writing, research, and teaching. Others view history as a foundational aspect of liberal arts scholarship, and provide analysis and astute interpretation in careers in politics, business, or any field they are called to pursue.

The Bachelor of Arts degree requires 6 hours of intermediate language courses. The Bachelor of Science degree substitutes Macroeconomics and Probability and Statistics for the language requirement. The degree requirements are identical otherwise. Students who complete the History program will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the history of Western Civilization, the United States, and other areas of specialization, as reflected in the elective history courses they have taken.

  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct efficient and effective research and to use that research in well-written historical essays and other papers.

  • Demonstrate the ability to articulate a well-developed philosophy of history that integrates the Christian faith
