ESED 3113 - SURVEY OF THE EXCEPTIONAL LEARNER This is a required course for certification in Exceptional Student Education, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education. This is an introductory course that examines the history, characteristics and issues in exceptional education. The course covers all areas of exceptionality and their manifestations from early childhood through adulthood. It is designed to provide students with a firm grounding in the foundations of special education and expose them to the reconstruction of the field, in order that they may better deal with new and ever-changing developments. In addition to classroom meetings, a minimum of 10 hours of observation/participation in a clinical setting is required.

NURS 3113 - PHARMACOLOGY FOR THE RN This course prepares students to integrate pharmacologic principles into the care of patients and to administer drugs with consideration to safety, lifespan, cultural, legal and ethical implications. Drugs affecting cardiac, renal, respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal, reproductive, and central/ autonomic nervous systems, as well as anti-infective, anti-inflammatory and chemotherapeutic agents are presented. Relevant nursing interventions, including patient education, are emphasized. Open to RN to BSN students only.

NURS 3203 - TRANSITION TO THE BACCALAUREATE NURING ROLE This course explores the BSN competencies, which differ from those of a nurse holding an associate degree. The course will focus on a deep understanding of the changing U.S. health care delivery system, including its relationship to nursing theories, standards and scope of practice, and roles and responsibilities of the nurse. The role of the nurse in policy development and political action at the employer, local, state, and national levels are emphasized.

NURS 3214 - HEALTH ASSESSMENT FOR THE RN This course builds upon the RN’s current competence in physical assessment. The course focuses on increasing students’ skill level in performing a complete physical examination and health history. A variety of specialized assessments, including mental status exams, pain, nutritional, family and cultural assessments, as well as domestic violence and substance abuse evaluations are considered and strategies to integrate findings into the plan of care are explored. Students complete 45 contact hours completing health assessments/health history on actual patients with mentor supervision.

NURS 4405 - NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT FOR THE RN This course introduces the roles of leader, manager, and follower in the context of healthcare organizations. The course explores concepts associated with leadership, such as interpersonal communication, conflict, change, strategic decision making, team building, power, politics and influence, and delegation. The competencies of a first-line manager in budgeting, staffing, scheduling and other human relations functions are also explored. Students will spend 90 hours in leadership and manager activities related to developing a project with a nursing leader. This course is only for the RN-to-BSN program.

NURS 4415 - COMMUNITY NURSING AND POPULATION HEALTH This course provides a solid foundation in community and public health nursing concepts; interventions for individuals, families, and communities; health promotion; and the multifaceted role of the community-oriented nurse. The focus will be on developing competence in assessing the needs of a population, developing and implementing appropriate interventions and evaluating their effectiveness. They will spend 90 hours preparing a project to provide care to a group of patients, assessing needs, then developing, implementing, and evaluating an appropriate intervention(s). Students also care for individual clients within a community setting, with particular attention to strategies to support patients as they transition from one level of care to another. This course is for the RN-to-BSN program only.
