  • EDUC 3243 - TEACHING SOCIAL SCIENCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOL


    This course is a study of the objectives, organization of materials, teaching methods, development of content, and evaluation procedures for teaching social science in the secondary school (6-12). Emphasis is on effective teacher behaviors in areas of instructional organization and development, presentation of subject matter, and verbal/nonverbal communication as supported by the domain base of the Florida Performance Measurement System.

    This course is an investigation of genres in literature, with an emphasis on the use of developmentally appropriate curriculum practices and numerous award-winning childrens books and authors. Culturally and instructionally diverse learning activities for the K-6 classroom are prepared.

  • ESED 3113 - SURVEY OF THE EXCEPTIONAL LEARNER


    This is a required course for certification in Exceptional Student Education, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education. This is an introductory course that examines the history, characteristics and issues in exceptional education. The course covers all areas of exceptionality and their manifestations from early childhood through adulthood. It is designed to provide students with a firm grounding in the foundations of special education and expose them to the reconstruction of the field, in order that they may better deal with new and ever-changing developments. In addition to classroom meetings, a minimum of 10 hours of observation/participation in a clinical setting is required.

  • NURS 3013 - NURSING HISTORY AND THEORY


    This course provides an introduction of the history of nursing and the nursing theories developed throughout the eras of nursing practice. The discussion of history nursing will guide the different nursing theories discussed from Nightingale to present day.  It will include the development of nursing theory including components and concepts found in nursing theories. The connections between theory and their importance for practice and the nursing profession will be discussed.

  • NURS 3113 - PHARMACOLOGY FOR THE RN


    This course prepares students to integrate pharmacologic principles into the care of patients and to administer drugs with consideration to safety, lifespan, cultural, legal and ethical implications. Drugs affecting cardiac, renal, respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal, reproductive, and central/ autonomic nervous systems, as well as anti-infective, anti-inflammatory and chemotherapeutic agents are presented. Relevant nursing interventions, including patient education, are emphasized. Open to RN to BSN students only.

  • NURS 3153 - RESEARCH AND EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE


    This course prepares students to evaluate and synthesize research data, particularly from outcomes, intervention, and translational research. Students use these skills to analyze practice protocols, making recommendations for their improvement.

  • NURS 3203 - TRANSITION TO THE BACCALAUREATE NURING ROLE


    This course explores the BSN competencies, which differ from those of a nurse holding an associate degree. The course will focus on a deep understanding of the changing U.S. health care delivery system, including its relationship to nursing theories, standards and scope of practice, and roles and responsibilities of the nurse. The role of the nurse in policy development and political action at the employer, local, state, and national levels are emphasized.

  • NURS 3214 - HEALTH ASSESSMENT FOR THE RN


    This course builds upon the RN’s current competence in physical assessment. The course focuses on increasing students’ skill level in performing a complete physical examination and health history. A variety of specialized assessments, including mental status exams, pain, nutritional, family and cultural assessments, as well as domestic violence and substance abuse evaluations are considered and strategies to integrate findings into the plan of care are explored. Students complete 45 contact hours completing health assessments/health history on actual patients with mentor supervision.

  • NURS 4405 - NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT FOR THE RN


    This course introduces the roles of leader, manager, and follower in the context of healthcare organizations. The course explores concepts associated with leadership, such as interpersonal communication, conflict, change, strategic decision making, team building, power, politics and influence, and delegation. The competencies of a first-line manager in budgeting, staffing, scheduling and other human relations functions are also explored. Students will spend 90 hours in leadership and manager activities related to developing a project with a nursing leader. This course is only for the RN-to-BSN program.

  • NURS 4415 - COMMUNITY NURSING AND POPULATION HEALTH


    This course provides a solid foundation in community and public health nursing concepts; interventions for individuals, families, and communities; health promotion; and the multifaceted role of the community-oriented nurse. The focus will be on developing competence in assessing the needs of a population, developing and implementing appropriate interventions and evaluating their effectiveness. They will spend 90 hours preparing a project to provide care to a group of patients, assessing needs, then developing, implementing, and evaluating an appropriate intervention(s). Students also care for individual clients within a community setting, with particular attention to strategies to support patients as they transition from one level of care to another. This course is for the RN-to-BSN program only.

  • NURS 4502 - CAPSTONE PROJECT


    This course is a synthesis of theoretical and clinical knowledge and skills for the professional baccalaureate-prepared nurse. This course focuses on critical thinking, professional collaboration, and level of practice. It provides the opportunity to develop a philosophy of nursing statement as well as reconstructing a professional CV/Resume as well as generating a professional Portfolio.

    This course studies the aesthetics, history, and techniques of music composition using electronic resources including computers, hardware samplers, synthesizers and digital or analogue recording equipment.
