SOWK 5273 - SOCIAL WORK IN THE HEALTHCARE SETTING


This course provides a detailed exploration of social work practice across the continuum of healthcare services. Students are provided with the necessary knowledge, skills, and ethical understanding required for competent practice as a healthcare social worker as well as an understanding of historic, current and anticipated conditions shaping practice. Social work practice is explored within the context of the psychosocial consequences of illness, the structure of the healthcare delivery system, technological advances, changing economic and regulatory practices, as well as ethical, political and legal considerations. Social and spiritual determinants of health including class, race, gender, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation are also analyzed.
