SOWK 5353 - Sports, Social Work and Wellnes
This practice course provides a comprehensive understanding of sports culture, sports influence, and sports life cycle, while identifying complex dilemmas encountered in social work practice with athletes. Placing an emphasis on sociocultural factors, sports communities, belief systems, behaviors, and emotions related to sports culture, students will learn therapeutic interventions to improve performance, enhance emotional well-being, and engage in team building. Common influential sports behaviors, community beliefs, and athletic influences are explored. Emphasis will be placed on implementing therapeutic interventions such as motivational interviewing, positive psychology, and mindfulness practices. By gaining an awareness of cultural beliefs, social justice issues, and sports communities students are challenged to foster a greater appreciation of sports awareness.
