GEDU 3493 - LITERACY FOUNDATIONS I: THE SCIENCE OF READING This course is a study of scientific theory and effective approaches for reading instruction, focusing on reading as the interactive weaving of word recognition and language comprehension. The essential components of literacy are studied: oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Characteristics of proficient readers, striving readers, and readers with dyslexia are examined along with practices for differentiating reading instruction.
