CLAS 1333 - HUMANE LETTERS IIIA This course builds upon prior study in the humane letters tradition by continuing to cultivate students’ intellectual, moral, and aesthetic formation through Socratic engagement with classic works of literature, history, and philosophy. While maintaining a focus on reading, writing, listening, and speaking, this course distinguishes itself by drawing more deeply from ancient sources, including classical historians like Herodotus and Thucydides. Emphasizing seminar discussion over survey, students explore enduring questions of human nature, justice, leadership, and the good life—not simply to absorb ancient thought, but to practice the art of thinking well. The course seeks to sharpen students’ ability to reason, interpret, and articulate insights as they engage timeless ideas that have shaped the Western tradition.
