Minor, Not For Profit

Nonprofit organizations meet many critical needs in our society and include organizations such as churches, social service agencies, hospitals, emergency relief organizations, and professional associations, among others.  These organizations have a critical need for skilled leadership in order to accomplish their goals. Throughout their careers, many people will either work for or be involved in nonprofit organizations such as members, volunteers, advocates, fundraisers,  lay leaders, and board members.  The nonprofit minor [or certificate] is designed to provide those who complete the program with the basic knowledge and skills in leading people, managing resources, and complying with the legal obligations within a nonprofit organization.

 

Students who complete the program requirements will be able to:

  1. Discuss management theories and their practical implications to a nonprofit organization and the ideal of servant leadership.

  2. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing in order to advocate for causes and collaborate with constituents to accomplish objectives.

  3. Understand the diverse population served by nonprofit organizations in order to be both culturally literate and sensitive.  

  4. Analyze financial data in conjunction with economic principles in order to make informed, responsible decisions with professional excellence.

  5. Develop budgets and establish plans to create financial sustainability.

  6. Understand the laws that govern the actions of nonprofit organizations in order to be able to make value oriented judgments.

Minor Core - 18 Credit Hours
