Bachelor of Science, Communication & Mass Media (Four-Year Plan)

Program Description

The Communication & Mass Media program emphasizes the principles and best practices of mass-mediated communication and human communication. The communication core focuses on various types of communication (interpersonal, intercultural, and organizational), storytelling, persuasion, and analysis of the mass media (courses including the theory, law, and the writing aspects of the mass media). Students are guided to become better communicators, whether their goal is to inform, entertain, or persuade; they also analyze communication artifacts and assess their effectiveness, persuasiveness, and ethics. The 12 credit hours of broadening electives allow for students to broaden their learning and perspectives with courses focused on topics including design thinking, and digital marketing, and visual storytelling and design (including two study abroad opportunities).

Potential Career Options

Potential career options for those pursuing this degree include communication consultant, communication manager, corporate communication coordinator, multimedia journalist, photojournalist, copy editor, managing editor, and other communication- and mass media- related careers. Graduates are equipped to improve the organizational communication of businesses, non-profit organizations, and corporations. Graduates can find fulfillment by helping people communicate more effectively and ethically in an interpersonal or intercultural context.
