This course examines the complex nature of culture and personal identity, explores populations at-risk, and encourages students to understand and appreciate diversity. An emphasis is placed on cultural competence, awareness of the patterns of power, privilege, and oppression experienced by diverse cultures, and skills relevant to engaging diversity and difference in social work practice. Students examine personal and social work values and their intersectionality with multiple factors including, but not limited to, age, class, color, culture, disability and ability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, immigration status, marital status, political ideology, race, religion/spirituality, sex, sexual orientation, and tribal sovereign status.
