SOWK 5723 - Responses to Disasters and Crisis This course will examine social work practice theories, interventions, and best practices as they relate to working with individuals, families, groups, and communities recovering from the effects of trauma and crises related to natural disasters, pandemics, and man-made disasters. Students will learn specific issues that pertain to survivors of disaster-related events and will broaden their understanding of implementing effective strategies to respond to crises as a social work practitioner. Students will learn the principles of social justice, advocacy, and multicultural competence when intervening with trauma-affected individuals and communities. There will be focus on disaster mental health (DMH), psychological first aid, crisis management, and intervention skills that are needed to work effectively with individuals, families, groups, and communities recovering from a disaster-related trauma.
