SOWK 5543 - Social Work Practice with Older Adults


This course will examine social work practice theories and interventions as they relate to older adults including the nature of the aging process, stage of life transitions, adaptability to change, and the ways in which interventions may assist in later life. Students will learn specific issues that pertain to older adults to include coping with age related changes, caregiving demands, legal and financial planning, elder abuse, intimacy, loss, and the ability to maintain dignity. There will be focus on methods of assessment, case management, and intervention skills, including the use of rapid assessment and diagnostic tools, that are needed to work effectively with older populations and family caregivers in a variety of community-based and institutional settings.
