General Requirements
All students admitted to a music degree program are required to:
- Audition for acceptance into the music department as a music degree seeking student.
- Take a theory diagnostic exam. A passing score places the student in Music Theory I and a non-passing score places the student in Introduction to Music
- Present a full recital in the senior year. (Music Business majors are exempt.)
- Enroll in applied music lessons each semester until the senior recital is presented. (Class piano courses do not satisfy the requirement for applied lessons but may count toward general electives.) (Music Business majors must have a minimum of 4 semesters of applied lessons.)
- Participate in a major ensemble (such as band or choir) which is led by a music faculty member each semester until graduation. (Music Business majors must have a minimum of 4 semesters of ensemble.)
- Fulfill the requirements for the music departmental recitals. This will include attending a total of 10 departmental and 5 outside concerts per semester. (Music Business major requires 4 semesters of Department Recital.)
- Pass the piano proficiency exam. Church Music and Music Business majors also must pass the guitar proficiency exam.
Transfer students who have previously taken Music Theory or Music History must take a placement test to properly place them in the appropriate theory and history classes. Any exceptions to departmental procedures, requirements, and policy must be authorized through the department chair. New music majors are required to attend a Music Orientation usually held prior to the SEU general orientation.
