Social Work Program Mission Statement

Preparing students for competent generalist social work practice within the context of a Christian worldview.

 Social Work Program Goals

1. To equip students to engage in the planned change process with systems of all sizes within a variety of fields and practice contexts.
2. To promote identification with the social work profession, commitment to social work values and the ability to apply social work ethical principles to guide professional practice.
3. To prepare students to become change agents who think critically about social issues and policies, and are committed to advancing social justice.
4. To encourage respect for human dignity and worth, and a commitment to strengths based practice with individuals, groups, and communities from diverse populations.
5. To create a learning context that fosters critical thinking, and enables students to apply theoretical frameworks and research to practice .
6. To prepare students to integrate faith and spirituality within social work practice with sensitivity to the diversity of settings and populations of practice.

Social Work Program Competencies

Graduates of the Social Work Program at Southeastern University will: 

1. Identify as professional social workers and serve as representatives of the profession, its mission, and its core values.
2. Be knowledgeable regarding social work ethical principles and standards and use them to guide professional practice.
3. Apply critical thinking to inform and communicate professional judgments.
4. Demonstrate sensitivity to the influence of difference at all levels of human experience and competence in practicing equitably with diverse populations.
5. Advance human rights and social and economic justice.
6. Engage in research-informed practice and practice-informed research.
7. Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment to inform and guide generalist social work practice with systems of all sizes. 
8. Engage in policy practice to advance social and economic well-being and to deliver effective social work services.
9. Respond proactively to contexts that shape practice.
10. Apply the knowledge and skills of generalist social work to practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, and seek to use those skills in service to the church and the community.
11. Integrate faith and social work practice in a way that embraces diversity and is consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics.

Entrance Requirements

Admission to the Social Work Program is intended to be the first step in the student’s “professionalization” and a process through which students and faculty can evaluate the “goodness of fit” between the student’s personal mission, goals, and values and the social work profession. Students are expected to apply for admission in the first semester of their junior year by completing the admissions packet provided by the program prior to enrolling in the Practice sequence.

Once an application is received it is evaluated by the Admissions Committee, which is comprised of the Social Work Program faculty and the Director of Academic Advising. Admission into the Social Work Program is based upon the assumption that students will acquire certain competencies, knowledge and values to facilitate their success in the Social Work Program. As a professional program, expectations for student success are based on the program’s Student Excellence Standards and exceed academic merit Please refer to the BSW Handbook and to the Application for Admission for further details regarding the admissions process.
