NURS 3106 - FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING CARE This course introduces the foundations of nursing practice, beginning with frameworks for evidenced-based nursing practice, nursing roles, and basic legal and ethical principles of care. The concepts of communication and documentation; safety and quality; infection control; mobility, sleep, rest and comfort; oxygenation; nutrition; fluid and electrolytes; elimination; medication administration, and patient education are introduced using the nursing process as a framework for developing, implementing, and evaluating care. Care of the pre- and post- operative patient is also introduced.

Drugs affecting cardiac, renal, respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal, reproductive, and central/autonomic nervous systems, as well as anti-infective, anti-inflammatory and chemotherapeutic agents are presented. Relevant nursing interventions, including patient education, are emphasized. Open to RN to BSN students only.

The role of the nurse in policy development and political action at the employer, local, state, and national levels are emphasized.

NURS 3214 - HEALTH ASSESSMENT FOR THE RN This course builds upon the RN’s current competence in physical assessment. The course focuses on increasing students’ skill level in performing a complete physical examination and health history. A variety of specialized assessments, including mental status exams, pain, nutritional, family and cultural assessments, as well as domestic violence and substance abuse evaluations are considered and strategies to integrate findings into the plan of care are explored.

NURS 4204 - MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING II This course builds on student competencies developed in NURS 3143 Medical-Surgical I. Evidence-based nursing care appropriate for adults with intermediate to complex medical-surgical conditions are addressed, with particular emphasis on acute conditions such as shock and multiple organ dysfunction, acute respiratory distress or failure or other conditions requiring critical care intervention. Emergency nursing and disaster nursing will also be explored.
