Program-Specific Admission/Entrance Requirements

An essay on the topic, “Why I want to pursue my master’s degree at Southeastern University.” Address how the Master of Education will help you improve your current/future career and how you can integrate your Christian faith. This essay should be two to three pages long, include your full name, and use 12-point, Times New Roman font. It should be double-spaced with one-inch margins.

A completed bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with evidence of one of the following:
a minimum GPA of 3.0
a combined score of at least 300 on the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) and a 4.0 or higher on the Analytical Writing section of the GRE. GRE scores must be recent enough to be considered valid by ETS. (If you took the GRE prior to August of 2011 the combined score must be at least 1,000 on the Verbal and Quantitative sections.)

For non-native English speakers a current TOEFL score at the mean level or higher.

Program Description

The Master of Education in Literacy Education at Southeastern University is a 30-credit-hour graduate program designed to prepare educators to become highly effective literacy professionals grounded in evidence-based instruction and the Science of Reading. The program equips working teachers with advanced knowledge and practical skills to assess, instruct, and support diverse learners across K–12 settings, including students with reading difficulties, multilingual learners, and students with disabilities. The M.Ed. in Literacy Education emphasizes the historical, theoretical, cognitive, and linguistic foundations of reading and writing, while preparing candidates to apply research-based instructional practices that improve literacy outcomes. Graduates develop strong competencies in literacy assessment, data-based decision making, curriculum design, and instructional leadership. Embedded Structured Literacy Certificate Students enrolled in the M.Ed. in Literacy Education may earn an embedded Structured Literacy Certificate as part of the 30-credit-hour degree, with no additional coursework required The certificate is aligned with the Science of Reading and prepares educators to implement explicit, systematic, and multisensory literacy instruction across Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 settings.
