Program Description
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with an Actuarial Science Concentration program is designed to prepare students for a successful career as an actuary by applying mathematical and statistical theory to analyze the economic costs of risks and uncertainty. It is intended for students who are detail-oriented, analytical thinkers with a strong mathematical background and who wish to gain expertise in mathematics, statistics, and financial theory as it relates to risk management. Graduates of the program are prepared for roles such as Health Insurance Actuary, Life Insurance Actuary, Property and Casualty Actuary, Enterprise Risk Management Actuary, or Pension and Retirement Benefits Actuary in industries including insurance (health, life, property/casualty), finance, investment firms, and government agencies. The curriculum emphasizes advanced mathematical and financial concepts with opportunities for independent research projects, department-wide feedback on major projects, and a Capstone project or Internship. The degree requires a total of 120 credit hours, of which 34 hours are in the foundational core, 60 hours are in the major core, and 26 hours are in Divine Design elective credit hours. For students wishing to continue their studies, this program prepares them for future graduate or professional study in Actuarial Science, Business, or Finance.
